Swell hindcast statistics for the Baltic Sea

چکیده
Abstract. The classic characterisation of swell as regular, almost monochromatic, wave trains does not necessarily accurately describe in water bodies shielded from the oceanic climate. In such enclosed areas locally generated waves still contribute to processes at air and seabed interfaces, their presence can be quantified by partitioning components based on speed relative wind. We present statistics for semi-enclosed Baltic Sea using 20 years swell-partitioned model data. significant height was mostly under 2 m, winter (DJF) mean typically less than 0.4 m; higher found limited nearshore areas. Swell were short (under 5 s), with periods over 8 s being rare. open-sea average ratio energy (to total energy) below – significantly World Ocean. Certain coastal dominated half time, because weak winds (U<5 m s?1) rather high heights. Swell-dominated events a 1 lasted 10 h. A cross-correlation analysis indicates that open sea is local wind when decays (dominant time lag roughly 15 h). Near coast, however, results suggest partially detached waves, although weather system generates them highest arrives h delay after low-pressure has already passed.

SAR-Based Wind Resource Statistics in the Baltic Sea
Ocean winds in the Baltic Sea are expected to power many wind farms in the coming years. This study examines satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from Envisat ASAR for mapping wind resources with high spatial resolution. Around 900 collocated pairs of wind speed from SAR wind maps and from 10 meteorological masts, established specifically for wind energy in the study area, are compar...
متن کاملWave Hindcast Study of the Caspian Sea
The significant effect of waves on coastal and marine activities urges the precise identification of wave characteristics using field measurements, theoretical studies, physical modeling or numerical simulations. In order to study thoroughly the wave climate in the Caspian Sea, a wave modeling and hindcast project was performed by Iranian National Center for Oceanography. In this study, one of ...

A research report from the Swedish Environmental Advisory Council, titled A Strategy for Ending Eutrophication of Seas and Coasts, argues that the Baltic Sea is facing an ecological flip, associated with changes characterized by excessive algal bloom and a fishing industry in crisis (MVB 2005). Eutrophication may be the most severe of the consequences faced by the Baltic Sea. According to HELCO...

This article is an update and extension of an earlier publication (SCHERNEWSKI & WIELGAT 2004). Intensive public discussions suggested slight modifications in the typology as well as an updating and completion of comparisons between our typology and the national typologies. We further show examples how the water body concept can be applied to subdivide coastal water types as a response to exter...
